When you launch a new website, you need to do something to call the attention of the search engines to crawl and index it, and finally give it a place in the search results (rank it!). If you build a website and don't drive attention to it, you are not going to have any organic traffic at all. You need to make sure you have the best possible visibility for your properties.

By now, if you are reading this, you probably have heard about my Web 2.0 strategies to dominate the search engines. In a nutshell, you position content and plant links on different Web 2.0 properties that Google loves! You use the proper anchor text and create the "account usernames" and titles in a way that include your target keyword.

So, to keep calling
Google's attention to our website, we want to make sure we are adding backlinks to it on a regular basis month after month after month. People often ask me: "when do you stop promoting a website?" My answer: "I only stop promoting a website when I stop wanted to make money from it!" Remember our word of the day: Consistency!

This consistent effort will show Google that you truly care about what you are promoting. Not only will you maintain your rankings-- they will grow over time as a result. Website aging is one of the factors that affect Google ranks (Google LOVES crusty old domains!)

Promoting the promoters

Most people understand the importance of one way links to their websites and Web 2.0 properties to get them to RANK. But, what many of them miss, or find out the hard way, is that one way links are not enough.

OK, you build a Squidoo lens and focus its links towards your website... and then what happens? NOTHING. Why? The Squidoo lens itself needs to be promoted to rank and bring you traffic. The fact that a property is a favorite of Google will not automatically make your page in that property a favorite one, unless the keyword has very low competition. Your Squidoo lens itself needs to be PROMOTED too! (Bookmarked!)

Remember: Google ranks pages, not domains. So Squidoo by itself just ain't enough for the big leagues.

How do you call the attention of the world (and Search Engines) to these "promoter" pages? By promoting them too! Promoting the Promoters!

So, it is getting complicated... you need to promote your website, and the promoting pages too . . . and come up with a plan that does it in a consistent way month after month.

The way I look at it is: if you don't care enough to continue promoting your (adding Social Bookmarks) websites on a regular basis, why you would expect Google to keep paying attention to you?

You Bookmark every important page of your website

A very important point about Bookmarking is that people usually only bookmark the index page (or only one other page) of the website. But, here is the most important point in this tutorial - EVERY important page of your website has to be Bookmarked.

Always remember: Google ranks pages, not websites. If you want a page to rank, you need to send links to it. Each individual page needs to rank and stand on its own.

Pick 2 or 3, or 20 main articles or your key product pages and add Social Bookmarks on a consistent basis. You don't bookmark your privacy policy or other "support" pages . . . only the important ones.

And you need to "spread" the bookmarking out over time, and you will see these pages rank!

Also, some people miss the fact that any page can be bookmarked... not just your own web site . . . if you have a Squidoo page or a Hubpage or a Youtube Video . . . they ALL need to be promoted.

Every time you add a new link toward your website in a Web 2.0 property - bookmark that page. This "LINK LOVE" will tell the search engines that your promoter page is interesting and will draw their attention. Since most of these promoter pages are in properties that already have other pages with high authority, the ranking of your page will grow faster than it would in a newly created website.

This is how we get pages with our offers listed on the first page of Google within hours. Two main things to consider:
  • New backlinks (and Social Bookmarks!) should be added consistently to any AND every page you want ranked.
  • You need to Bookmark any new promotional page you build. This includes other media that you upload . . . like videos or podcasts, images or documents.
